"Butter Up"
"Butterfield 8" means different things to different folks: It was one of several telephone exchanges up until the 1960s—BU-8 (288) would have been the prefix—and it was a classic Elizabeth Taylor film. Starting this week, Butterfield 8 is also a sharp- looking restaurant that serves American fare. The front room has an old–New York feel: The walls are wrapped in handsome walnut panels, and giant crystal chandeliers hang from a ceiling with original crown-moldings. Sit at one of the U-shaped banquettes and you can dive into some old-fashioned dishes like tiger shrimp wrapped in apple-smoked bacon, or grilled skirt steak with crispy onions (pictured). In the back is a lounge where you can sip cocktails and stare at a photo mural of the cityscape—grabbed from Alfred Hitchcock's Rope. 5 E 38th St between Fifth and Madison Aves (212-679-0646).—Heather Tierney |
